Summer is almost over!

Believe it or not, the summer has ended and it is time once again to get ready for school to start. Although I love summer vacation,  I also look forward to this time of year.  Teachers are excited to meet their students and begin sharing new and exciting information with them. Students may be nervous as they enter their new classrooms but soon reunite with old friends. New families are eager to see how their children will grow and develop during the year.

The beginning of the school year gives all of us a fresh start.  It is an opportunity to put our best foot forward, to form new and improved habits. I wanted to share a few things that may make the back to school season a little easier:
  • At least two weeks before school starts, begin putting students to bed time  a little earlier and waking them up a little earlier each day.  Students must be in their classrooms ready to learn by 7:45 AM.  Adjusting to new sleep patterns can be difficult after 8 weeks of sleeping in.
  • Set up a homework center in your home.  While you are out buying school supplies for the classroom, don't forget to purchase some supplies for your homework center.  Allow your student to decorate and arrange the center so that it will be an area that they take pride in.
  • Review basic skills:  encourage students to practice with math flashcards, play educational games on the computer, or read passages from their favorite books to you.  Get their minds warmed up and ready to learn!
  • Don't forget Pine Ridge students wear school uniforms daily.  Take advantage of the back to school sales!  If your child has had a growth spurt over the summer - we welcome donations of clean gently used uniforms that are in great condition for our uniform closet.  We do ask that clothing is clean and ready to wear when it is donated.
  • Please review with your student your expectations for them at dismissal time.  If they are going to a new daycare or riding a bus for the first time - review the location of the daycare, make sure they meet the provider before the first day of school.  Make sure students know where their bus stop is, who will be waiting for them at home, etc.
  • Please don't forget to let the teacher know how your student is getting home during the first day of school.  Often parents will choose to pick students up on the first day, but the emergency card says the child will be riding the bus.  Teachers must have all transportation changes in writing.
There is so much to think about as we prepare for a new school year.  Remembr, Pine Ridge is here to assist in any way possible.  When in doubt - call the front office!
